| HURRICANE KATRINA RESPONSE GU is concerned
grandfamilies will be lost in the aftermath of the hurricane. Working with
our close partners in Mississippi and Louisiana, GU will accept funds to
directly pass to provide supports and services to grandfamilies in need.
Our first goal is grandfamilies housing. Just today, GU learned of
vacancies at the grandparent apartment complex in Baton Rouge. There are
currently 15 two-bedroom units available and grandfamilies signed up,
ready to move in. Your contribution will be used towards housing for 15
families in the following way: $300 will provide the application fees
$1,485 will provide the security deposits $5,625 will provide the first
months rent of $375 per unit So a total of $7,410 will provide the much
needed immediate shelter for 15 families. Wont you help? Make your
contribution payable to: Generations United 1333 H Street, NW Suite 500W
Washington, D.C. 20005 Please write Katrina Grandfamilies Apartments in
the memo line of your check. Remember, 100% of your donation goes directly
to helping grandfamilies affected by Hurricane Katrina. Funds raised
beyond this amount will help cover utilities and furnishings. GU is also
accepting funds to work with existing relief efforts, including government
and NGOs, to advocate on behalf of the special needs of grandfamilies and
guarantee they are included in response plans and efforts. Finally, GU
will continue to fight for grandfamilies by working with federal and state
law makers to implement policy changes to ensure adequate support for the
families including addressing legal issues that affect grandparents
crossing state lines and calling for the full funding of existing housing
policy, known as LEGACY, which would provide funding for housing
developments for grandfamilies with emphasis in the three states affected
by the hurricane. GU can not do this vital work with out the support of
our members. Thank you. Donna Butts Executive Director Generations United
